![]() ![]() ![]() What was the crowd like?Locals have been flocking here since '89. It's counter service only, so you'll need to stand in a perpetually long line, but the food's worth the inevitable wait. Save your money and go next door to Flatbread.Tell us about your first impressions when you arrived.Paia Fish Market has a casual, cozy, family-friendly atmosphere with communal wooden tables, dive bar decor, and cool surf photography. At their price premium, they really need to be #1. Remember that when you see something like "#8 restaurant" that there's probably less than 20 places in town to eat. But nope.just cleared the table and gave us our check. And again, any experienced server should have seen that we left behind $30 worth of fish and asked about it. I'm not sure if they had problems thawing frozen fish or something, but it didn't taste fresh at all. Of the 5 piece plate, I only ate 2 because it just wasn't good. I love o'toro and have had it at many restaurants around the world. They had grilled salmon on the menu, which we were going to get, but they supposedly "ran out of salmon already that day" even though we had reservations for shortly after they opened. They were about the same quality fish that you'd expect to get at a nice grocery store finitely not at a high end sushi place that's 50 yards from the ocean. We had two of the sushi rolls and they were ok.but they weren't outstanding. The table next to us had the same issue.įood: Their Kushiyaki skewers were ok. Definitely avoid their Vana Colado - a play on a typical pina colada. Most of the drinks were either far too sweet or they just went a little too far with trying to have artsy combinations that didn't quite go. The other two just sat on our table until we departed without any question about why there weren't being consumed. We tried 4 different cocktails and only drank 2. You'll notice that we also had some disappointments with both food and cocktail that a professional server should have never accepted as being ok.Ĭocktails: If you ignore my review, at least go during happy hour so that your cocktail disappointments will only cost you $10 instead of $16-18. This service might have worked fine at a burger joint, but it's not acceptable for a high end sushi place. For example, we heard about 12 different reasons of why they were out of salmon, and some of them were frankly not plausible. When bartenders or kitchen staff delivered food/drinks, they gave inconsistent answers to some of the same questions that people asked. We heard her repeatedly tell customers that different things were her favorite thing on the menu after she'd told us that she was a vegetarian and didn't eat most of the food there. Service: our main server was very inexperienced, didn't know the menu, and blatantly made up incorrect answers to questions if she didn't know the answer. They were the best thing on the menu (but not worth going there for). If you don't believe the review, and you go there anyhow - get some of the kushiyaki skewers. The location is cute and has a lot of potential. But they've got to fix some things if they want to be in business much longer. I know that restaurants are still "figuring things out" after COVID and I also know that Vana has been through a few chefs. The highlight of the meal was actually people-watching the other people at the restaurant as they also came to. We reserved a table at Vana Paia during our honeymoon while staying next door at the Paia Inn and it was a very expensive complete disappointment. Thank you so much for a great experience. I don’t when we will be back in the Paia area if ever but this restaurant deserves recognition for what they bring to the community. Our server Samantha was attentive, funny, complimented my eyes lol and even suggested their tuna sashimi appetizer which was mind blowing. It’s an exceptional restaurant with fantastic food and amazing service. The nigiri melts in your mouth and leaves you wanting more. I have had sushi all over the United States but Vana’s is by far the best. I also ordered an additional local tuna nigiri to quell my hunger. I ordered the sushi dinner special which gave me broad options of the nigiri, 7 pieces in total. I highly recommend the dragon roll which has delicious eel on top of it. rolls there are amazing options to choose from my wife enjoyed the spicy tuna and the dragon roll. The menu may look small but everything they offer is ridiculously fresh, if you love. The restaurant is located within the Paia Inn in the small downtown area of Paia. This was our first time at Vana Paia and hopefully will not be our last.
